The late Stig “Stikkan” Anderson founded the Polar Music Prize in 1989 with the intention that it should become the most coveted and prestigious prize in music. Polar isn’t the Grammys. It isn’t just about big names being pulled out of a hat by industry insiders. It celebrates music that crosses borders and unites cultures – like a Nobel Prize for pioneering musicianship.

The new symbol is a refined and redrawn version of Polar’s existing logo, in which the musical elements are reduced in number and complexity to ensure their legibility at various sizes and scales.
The wordmark was refined to increase its legibility, adjusting the kerning and extending the letterforms for continuity and cohesion.
A new animated visual element takes the five lines of a stave as inspiration, using them as an expressive canvas to communicate unity and musical moods by echoing sonic waveforms.
Unlike Nobel, which awards its laureates according to strict categories, the Polar Music Prize spans all musical genres, acknowledging the work of exceptional individuals, groups and institutions across the globe, awarding one classical and one “popular” artist each year. Our task was to transform this well-loved and respected brand into a digital-first platform as coherent as its mission to celebrate great music.
The Polar Music Prize is the only award to acknowledge the breadth and depth of the global music scene, giving equal weighting to disciplines as varied as electronica, hip-hop and jazz, raga and rock ‘n’ roll. All of our work was pinned to the concept of Celebrating Music. Uniting Cultures.
Having established a concept, our visual work for the brand began with redrawing and simplifying Polar Music Prize’s ornate crown logo, built from a stave and musical notation. We refined and simplified the logomark and redrew and extended the wordmark, all to ensure improved legibility on devices and screens. We also created a versatile and unifying animated device for use across social channels and redesigned and rebuilt Polar’s website from the ground up.
Two colours, Polar Night and Midnight Sun, were created to form a sophisticated brand palette that associates the brand's origin – and at the same time echoes the former black and gold without feeling gaudy.
Polar Music Prize’s website UI and UX was redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up, simplifying the experience of navigating the site and improving its legibility. In collaboration with Oridnary.
